Dr. Joel Schlessinger: Prevention talks to the doctor about botox treatments

Thinking About Botox? Read This First: Prevention interviews Dr. Joel Schlessinger about the most effective botox treatments.

Getting injections of the Botulinum toxin type A to reduce wrinkles is becoming increasingly popular. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, this practice grew 14% last year, to reach 5.4 million injections. This is according to “Thinking About Botox? Read This First” by Katie Becker in Prevention.

Many times, people also use Botox to reduce frown lines, which form between a person’s eyebrows because of repeated squinting or frowning. Because these lines are formed through facial movements, they can also occur in younger adults.

Here’s the question, though. Which brand of botox treatments works better?

It’s possible that many/most people don’t even know that there is a choice of brands. But, there is. There is Botox manufactured by Allergan and there is also Dysport by Medicis. In a study published in Dermatologic Surgery, it was determined that Dysport produced results more quickly. The study of botox treatments took place in multiple centers, with double-blind, placebo-controlled trials.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger served as head author of the Dermatologic Surgery and shares his perspective.

From interactions with his patients and colleagues, Dr. Joel Schlessinger sees Dysport as the better choice for faster results. In the study, improvement was seen as early as 24 hours after injection, with an average time of improvement being two to four days.
