Dr. Joel Schlessinger shares an unexpected predictor of facial signs of aging.

Do you wish you could look into a crystal ball to see how you’ll age? does the next best thing.

Shine Magazine - Will You Age Well? 7 Signs to Tell You Now
In their article “Will You Age Well? 7 Signs to Tell You Now,” which got published on Yahoo!’s Shine, talks to experts about the seven key features of aging – and what that means to you. Dr. Joel Schlessinger addresses one of those seven features: the topic of facial symmetry and its role in our appearance as we age.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger points out that symmetrical facial features allow a person’s appearance to age more slowly.

As sagging, wrinkling and uneven pigmentation occur as we age, these signs are more apparent, overall, in people with uneven facial features. So, if you start out with more symmetrical features, signs of aging will most likely take longer to show on your face.

As an interesting sidenote, the National Health Service of England reported on a study that states that men with symmetrical faces are less likely to lose their memory and intelligence as they age. This research was conducted by scholars at the University of Edinburgh and received funding from the British Academy, the German Research Foundation and the UK Medical Research Council. This study initially appeared in the peer-reviewed medical journal Evolution and Human Behaviour.

You can slow down signs of aging with topical products found at that are recommended by Dr. Joel Schlessinger.

Here are two of the best choices:

    • SkinMedica Dermal Repair Cream: the skin-softening vitamins and protective antioxidants of this cream encourage hydration and skin repair and help to slow down signs of aging; this SkinMedica cream contains algae extract to normalize moisture, Amazonian tree extract to protect the skin and more

Danielle’s Landing invites Dr. Joel Schlessinger to refute a hair growth myth.

Danielle’s Landing shares top myths about hair – and then has experts, such as Dr. Joel Schlessinger, tell us the real story.

Danielle's Landing - The Beautiful You - Hair Myths
It can be hard to tell which “facts” about hair are really true and which ones are myths that have been repeated so often that people just assume that they’re true. So, Danielle’s Landing gathered together a group of experts to tease out the truth.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger tackles the myth that all hair grows at the same rate.

If that was true, Danielle points out, shouldn’t the “perfect symmetry of a fresh haircut” last?

In the article, the doctor confirms that hair does not grow at the same rate and he shares that, in reality, hair grows at a different rate throughout your body, including on your scalp. Hair goes through three stages of growth, he adds, and there is nothing you can do about that except to get regular trims.

For information on how diet can help you have healthy hair, see the WebMD article, “Eat Right for Your Hair Type,” where it describes how your hair needs the same vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are needed by the rest of your body.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger offers tips on treating sensitive skin at Daily Glow.

Daily Glow asks skin care experts, including Dr. Joel Schlessinger, for their tips on sensitive skin.

Daily Glow - Signs That May Mean You Have Sensitive Skin
The article is titled “Signs That May Mean You Have Sensitive Skin.” These signs include red, itchy, dry, flaky, stinging, swollen and/or irritated skin – and, according to one expert at the American Academy of Dermatology, nearly 50 percent of people in her practice have experienced inflamed skin at some point in their lives.

Typically, skin cells serve as a barrier by holding water in, the article explains, and keeping irritants out.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger adds that the skin barrier is thinner in people with sensitive skin.

Because of this thinner skin, active ingredients and fragrances in soaps, cleansers and the like are more likely to burn. If you notice this pattern, try fragrance-free products to see if this fixes the problem.

Here are just a couple of products available at for people with sensitive skin:

SkinMedica Sensitive Skin Cleanser
    • SkinMedica Sensitive Skin Cleanser: this is a gentle, creamy cleanser containing cucumber, chamomile and Matricaria Flower Extract. Use this product to remove makeup and excess oil and to fight back against environmental pollutants. • Sothys Beauty Essentials Trial Kit for Sensitive and Dry Skin: this kit contains Soothing Beauty Milk; Soothing Lotion; Hydroptimale THI3 Hydrating Serum; and Hydroptimale THI3 Comfort Hydrating Crème. According to, the troubled economy may be driving consumers to look for less costly alternatives when they have relatively minor ailments, including skin care issues. Next, they offer suggestions of less costly – but highly effective – solutions.

One of those solutions is FixMySkin, a face/body/lip balm that can treat:

  • dry skin
  • chapped lips
  • psoriasis
  • eczema
  • insect bites
  • poison ivy
  • seborrheic dermatitis
  • allergic skin reactions to cosmetics and other products

Dr. Joel Schlessinger was interviewed for this article, and he said that it took multiple tries to find just the right formula for his healing balm: FixMySkin.

According to the doctor, prior to the invention of FixMySkin, there was only one lip balm that contained hydrocortisone 1% (the active ingredient in FixMySkin) and it had taste challenges and a somewhat messy application.

The goals of the doctor, then, were to create a hydrocortisone balm with a pleasing taste and smooth application. He accomplished his goals by making FixMySkin oil based, rather than petroleum based, and adding cocoa butter for a better taste.

Here is more helpful information about the revolutionary FixMySkin products.

DaddyMDGuides - Feature on Joel Schlessinger M.D.
Dr. Joel Schlessinger and his wife Nancy have two children: Claire, age 20, and Daniel, age 17. In this article, the doctor shares insights into his philosophy of and experiences with fatherhood.

He cites the choice of public schools versus private schools as his biggest challenge. Ultimately, he and Nancy decided on public schools, after much input from his parents — and he describes the family’s experiences with the public school system as a “love affair.”

This stellar education led Claire to Brown University, while Daniel is a freshman at Northwestern University, where he is in the medical program.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger reveals his philosophy of fatherhood: “there is no right or wrong, and less is sometimes more.”

No pathway, he adds, is right for each child and adapting to a child’s personality is key.

Being a father helps the doctor treat teenagers and their skin care issues in his private practice — and to offer quality products for them.

Pevonia SpaTeen - All Skin Kit

  • His biggest regret (not taking more philosophy, art and history courses in college)

The author of this piece is Dr. Barankin from Toronto, Canada. He has authored and/or edited five books in dermatology and is the co-editor of Dermanities, an online humanities journal with a dermatological focus.

It would take far more than one blog post to discuss each of these top specialties, but the next two posts will focus on one specific procedure.

Focus on liposuction: there is a significant amount of helpful information about this in-demand procedure at

Tumescent Liposuction - Before and After Results
Liposuction is a treatment that contours the body (rather than treating obesity) by removing unwanted localized fat cell deposits from the body. Dr. Joel Schlessinger does not perform traditional liposuction; rather, he performs tumescent/SmartLipo that greatly reduces safety concerns associated with the surgery.

With tumescent liposuction, large amounts of sterile salt water, local anesthesia and diluted epinephrine are infused into the focus area of the body. This causes this area to swell and become anesthetized.  The doctor then uses a cannula to vacuum out unwanted fat. Because the cannula is so small, discomfort is greatly minimized and recovery time is significantly reduced.

In SmartLipo, the doctor uses a laser. For more information about how the use of laser enhances tumescent liposuction (through the melting of unwanted fat), see the American Academy of Dermatology article on liposuction.

The doctor’s patients are typically back to work and participating in daily activities within 24 hours or so with minimal bruising.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger has performed more than 3,000 tumescent liposuctions.

Joel Schlessinger MD - Tumescent Liposuction information
Because of the continuing interest in the topic of liposuction, the doctor is providing more information on the subject of tumescent liposuction. Dr. Joel Schlessinger trained for the procedure via the inventor himself: Dr. Jeffrey Klein.

The doctor provides the treatment in a comfortable, relaxed environment — and there is no need for general anesthesia. Recovery time is short, perhaps as short as 24 to 48 hours.

Are you wondering if you would be a good candidate for tumescent liposuction/SmartLipo?

VelaShape Treatment - Before and After Photos

Here are some questions you should ask yourself:

  • Have I regularly exercised?
  • Have I watched my diet?
  • Do I still have fatty deposits that aren’t responding to diet and exercise?

If so, then it makes sense to consider a combination of tumescent liposuction and SmartLipo. In this procedure, Dr. Joel Schlessinger prepares the area of the body with saline and localized anesthesia; he then further prepares the area by using lasers (SmartLipo) before suctioning out fat through a cannula and a high pressure vacuum.

Although this procedure is not a treatment for cellulite, patients often notice a difference in their cellulite with this treatment when done along with VelaShape™.

With VelaShape™ you can achieve a well-shaped body in as few as four sessions. Typically, the skin’s surface is gradually smoothed and the area is reshaped.
