Joel Schlessinger MD featured as an expert on Huffington Post about sunscreen use in schools

Dr. Joel Schlessinger was recently featured on the Huffington Post about the use of sunscreen in schools. The video clip gives the opinion of Dr. Joel Schlessinger and two mothers with differing views on the use of sunscreens in schools.

Many schools have banned the use of sunscreen for children yet the children are exposed to direct sunlight during outdoor recess. Many parents are up in arms about sunburns while some parents and administration are concerned about legal and medical consequences.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger was very shocked to hear about this new rule. While he understands why the administration has formed such a regulation, he disagrees with it.

“Two or more blistering sunburns can increase the risk of melanoma by up to 10 times later on in life. So this isn’t just a minor issue, this is a very serious issue that they allowed this to happen,” he said.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger agreed with Jesse Michner, a mother whose children recently came home from school with severe sunburns because they were not allowed to apply sunscreen during a school field day.

“This is not a question of political correctness, this is about doing the right thing for the kids you’re taking care of,” said Dr. Joel Schlessinger.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger discusses ways to improve your look without surgery on

Dr. Joel Schlessinger was recently featured in an article on entitled “Are These High-Maintenance Cosmetic Procedures Worth Going Under the Knife For?” While this article discusses everything from tummy tucks to face lifts, Dr. Joel Schlessinger commented on fillers and Botox-like treatments that he performs in Omaha.

Botox treatments

Dr. Joel Schlessinger said results from a Botox procedure last approximately three months.

“These treatments need ongoing maintenance,” he said. “The face returns to close its original look in most people, but with some benefits that last. The nicest benefit is when a frowning person is ‘retrained’ not to frown.”

Some people end up holding their face in a certain way that causes wrinkles. Botox injections interrupt this pattern and force them out of their furrow, causing the face to appear more natural and relaxed.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger recommends that patients should return every three months to maintain the frown-free look.

Lip fillers

Dr. Joel Schlessinger says that lip fillers last five to six months on average.

“If you are a whistler, smoker or gum chewer, they don’t last quite as long,” he said. Dr. Joel Schlessinger uses Belotero, Restylane and Juvederm for a fuller, plumper pout.

“Subtlety is key,” he said and recommended that a refill should be performed after six months. Touch-ups sooner than six months can lead to abnormal or overdone lips.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger shares how to get rid of puffy eyes in Family Circle

Dr. Joel Schlessinger was recently featured in the September 2012 issue of Family Circle. His expert commentary was listed in a column about how to get rid of swollen, puffy eyes after a long night.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger recommends placing a bag of frozen veggies over your eyelids for approximately 10 minutes. The coolness “decreases blood flow, reduces swelling and feels good,” he said.

Another way to reduce puffiness is with the consistent use of an eye gel or eye serum. Some of Dr. Joel Schlessinger’s favorite eye treatment products include:
