Dr. Joel Schlessinger was featured as an expert in the recent issue of WebMD the Magazine in an article titled Beauty 411. In this article, Dr. Joel Schlessinger discusses why pores become enlarged and how one can keep their appearance minimized.
“Unlike sun damage or smile lines, large pores are one problem you had nothing to do with. You can blame heredity,” says Dr. Joel Schlessinger.
A pore is the visible end of an oil gland. People with oilier skin tend to have more visible pores than those with dry skin. If a pore is clogged with dirt and oil, it can look larger and darker.
Dr. Joel Schlessinger recommends keeping pores as clean and clear as possible as well as using sunscreen regularly to minimize their appearance. However, he does note that no treatment or ingredient can actually shrink pore size.

Ulta.com, a leading beauty and skin care website, recently featured Dr. Joel Schlessinger as an expert on anti aging skin care products. In the article, “Age-Erasing Skin Secrets,” Dr. Joel Schlessinger sheds light on the effectiveness of retinoids when it comes to signs of skin aging.
Dr. Joel Schlessinger said that prescription products like Retin-A provide quicker, more effective results than over-the-counter retinols.
“This sometimes comes at the risk of having irritation,” he said. “People with sensitive skin frequently have challenges integrating a true form of a retinoid, such as Retin-A, into their regimen.”
However, when you use a product like Retin-A, you’ll see dramatic results, fast. Dr. Joel Schlessinger explains that if you use a less powerful form of retinol, you’ll get a slower-acting treatment.
“Generally, most other individuals get used to either product and experience improvements over several months in the clarity and appearance of their skin,” Dr. Joel Schlessinger said.
To receive a prescription for Retin-A, you need to visit your local dermatologist. Set up an appointment with Dr. Joel Schlessinger today and discover if Retin-A is right for your skin.
Joel Schlessinger MD was recently a featured expert on TheStyleandBeautyDoctor.com. In the article “Fall Skin Care Tips and Tricks with Dermatologist Dr. Schlessinger,” he answers common questions about caring for your skin as the weather changes.
“Fall is the time to take stock of what has happened over the summer to your skin,” Joel Schlessinger notes. He says that brown spots and melasma may have been worsened by sun exposure and a good hyperpigmentation treatment may be needed to lighten these areas.
As the weather becomes drier, our fingers and lips can become cracked and chapped. Joel Schlessinger MD also recommends repairing these sensitive areas with the FixMySkin 1% Hydrocortisone Balm.
Although we may not be outside as much as we were in the summer, Joel Schlessinger MD still says you should wear sunscreen every day.
“Sun exposure continues to occur, so it is important to wear sunscreen daily!”
Acne is another issue that may flare-up in the winter. Joel Schlessinger says that acne is partially hormonal and since people are generally closer together in the winter, hormonal-based acne breakouts may occur.
But the biggest thing to remember as the seasons change is that our skin needs some additional help to compensate for the changing seasons by upping or lowering oil production. Since the cooler months are drier, now is the time to switch out your moisturizer for a heavier, richer formula.

T’is the season for all things pumpkin – from lattes and pie to decorations and yes, even skin care. Joel Schlessinger MD was recently featured in the Jewish Exponent article, “The Great Pumpkin.” Here, he discusses the benefits of using pumpkin as a key ingredient in many skin care products.
Pumpkin contains vitamins A and C, Omega-3 and antioxidants, as well as nutrients and minerals that help nourish the body and build tissue. When this ingredient is applied topically, pumpkin enzymes exfoliate away buildup without abrasive scrubbing, making it a perfect product for sensitive skin.
Joel Schlessinger MD’s signature skin care line, LovelySkin, offers several products with pumpkin as the star ingredient. His favorite product, the LovelySkin Pumpkin Clarifying Mask, not only contains high levels of antioxidants but it also has a pleasant, naturally occurring fragrance.
“The antioxidant makeup is the main reason for [pumpkin’s] success as a skin treatment externally, but the same can be said for ingesting it as well,” he said. “The level of antioxidants directly correlates with the benefits that will accrue for the skin.”
LovelySkin.com offers a variety of pumpkin products that improve the tone and texture of your skin while shielding it from free radical damage. Some of these products include:
- Revision Skincare Pore Refining Pumpkin Mask, a deep-cleansing mask that leaves pores looking smaller and refined.
- glo therapeutics Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub, a gentle facial scrub that reveals a bright, radiant complexion.
- Eminence Yam and Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, an exfoliating peel that minimizes the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines and sun damage.
