Dr. Joel Schlessinger was recently featured in a broadcast segment titled “Age Spot Treatment: Before and After” on WOWT Omaha’s Channel 6 News. Malorie Maddox, co-anchor for the evening newscasts, visited Dr. Joel Schlessinger to see if dark spots really can be reversed.

Dark spots are a common skin concern that is easily treatable, Dr. Joel Schlessinger explained.

“Just about everybody over the age of 25 has some issues with this,” Dr. Joel Schlessinger told Maddox. “A lot of people have the attitude that it’s already done. I’ve already damaged my skin. I can’t get back.”

Maddox admitted to occasionally using a tanning bed, which Dr. Schlessinger said does contribute to more prominent signs of aging.

“I think tanning beds and brown spots go hand in hand,” he said. “If you go to a tanning bed, you’re going to get brown spots.”

With very little damage done, Dr. Joel Schlessinger said Maddox would have “a real chance of bouncing back.”

To diminish dark spots, Dr. Joel Schlessinger suggested a laser treatment followed by an Obagi skin care regimen.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger recommended a few treatments for the dark spots on Maddox’s face. First, he took pictures with a VISIA machine to assess the health of her skin. Images from this machine are able to show wrinkles, large pores, dark spots and other forms of sun damage that isn’t always visible to the naked eye.

Then, Dr. Joel Schlessinger performed a laser treatment to diminish the look of her dark spots. The procedure was done the same day in about 10 minutes. Maddox was also put on the Obagi Nu-Derm System, which works to correct sun damage, minimize the visible signs of aging and brighten the complexion.

Maddox returned six weeks later to see if the treatments worked.

“Six weeks later, you’ve leapfrogged your peers,” Dr. Joel Schlessinger told Maddox. She went from the 30th percentile to the 80th percentile for good skin.

“You’re doing better than most people right now and that wasn’t that hard,” he said.

Dr. Schlessinger also shared the easiest way to achieve healthy skin.

“If you stay out of the sun, I can guarantee you’ll have about a 10-year difference over your peers,” he said.
