Dr. Joel Schlessinger featured on Huffington PostDr. Joel Schlessinger was recently featured in an article on the Huffington Post about strange things that can cause harm to your skin. The article, “7 Weird Things That Could Be Damaging Your Skin,” highlighted several things that we deal with every day that could be affecting our skin’s health, including laptops, sports equipment, our clothes and certain foods. Dr. Joel Schlessinger commented on two weird things that can damage our skin, pets and milk.

Your pet may be giving you a rash, says Dr. Joel Schlessinger.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger says that the strange rash you have may be coming from your pet. “They can harbor infections including staph and MRSA,” he said. If you notice a strange irritation on your skin, make sure you get yourself checked at a doctor’s office and also get your pets checked as they might have mites that have transferred to your skin.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger also says that milk can be the culprit for skin flare-ups.

Although there hasn’t been extensive evidence that milk can cause acne, there have been many reports of patients noticing clearer skin after reducing or eliminating milk consumption. Dr. Joel Schlessinger says the hormones in milk may be causing acne flare-ups and it is a wise idea to switch to a non-dairy alternative, like almond milk. He warns against soy milk as it may also contain hormones. Read more from Dr. Joel Schlessinger about the link between milk and acne.

Always see your dermatologist for any skin irritation or irregularity, says Dr. Joel Schlessinger.

Skin irregularities can be a sign of an allergic reaction or a larger skin problem. If you notice anything out of the ordinary with your skin, call your dermatologist. Many strange things can make your skin irritated, but it’s best to know if there might be an underlying problem. What other weird things have you heard about that can damage the skin?
