Dr. Joel Schlessinger discusses beauty habits that actually age your skin
Wrinkles are a part of life. While this aspect of aging is unavoidable, there are a few beauty habits you can kick in favor of youthful skin. In a recent article on DailyMakeover.com titled “Bad Beauty Habits That Are Giving You Wrinkles,” Dr. Joel Schlessinger sheds light on a few of these habits that actually age your skin.
Smoking and chewing gum both cause premature wrinkles, Dr. Joel Schlessinger explains.
As a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Joel Schlessinger sees many patients with premature signs of aging. The most common cause, he says, is smoking.
“Smoking is the most common cause of wrinkles that we see,” Dr. Joel Schlessinger says. “There have been studies of twins that showed proof of this in stunning detail. So skip cigarettes and lose the wrinkles!”
Chewing gum is another culprit behind fine lines and wrinkles.
“Gum chewing produces a type of wrinkle that I see quite often on the lower mouth,” he says. “Additionally, it causes other issues in the mouth structure. This is an easy bad habit to give up and look better.”
Dr. Joel Schlessinger also warns against other bad beauty habits.
Not taking the time to wash your face before going to bed is another habit you should kick.
“When you sleep in your makeup, you are basically inviting wrinkles to your skin,”Dr. Joel Schlessinger says. “The makeup and environmental pollutants you accumulate during the day seep into your pores, breaking down collagen and elastin. This can speed up the aging process, leaving you with fine lines and wrinkles.”
For healthy, youthful skin, Dr. Schlessinger recommends cleansing and moisturizing every night before bed. He also suggests applying sunscreen every morning, even if you will be spending your day indoors.
“Exposure to the sun for even a few minutes can lead to a breakdown of collagen, leading to fine lines and wrinkles.”
